TG KY is 5 Years Old and Growing

The Lebanon Enterprise, Oct 1st, 2003

Ceremony will mark anniversary

Ken Porter, general manager for TG Kentucky, enjoys relating a favorite story when discussing his company.

“In the movie The Graduate, there is a scene where a friend turns to Dustin Hoffman and sums up the future to him in one word,” Porter said. “The word is ‘plastics’. And how very right he was.”

An Oct. 10 ceremony at Centre Square will mark TG Kentucky’s five-year anniversary in Lebanon. The ceremony will have two parts to it, a celebration part and a presentation part. Speakers and a sale-barrel breaking, a traditional of Japanese ceremony, will be part of the celebration.

The presentation part of the occasion will feature the donation of $20,000 from TG Kentucky and Toyota Manufacturing to Centre Square for the purchase of audio equipment and curtains for Centre Square.

TG Kentucky, a plastic injection molding company, will also present two other gifts to the community. The next gift will be a LED stop light to be installed at the corner of Main and Proctor Knott.

“The LED stoplight shows more brightly and can be seen by drivers even when the sun is bright,” said Porter. “Plus, the blue LED which is used to make the green light is made by TG.”

The last gift to the community will be six computers to be donated to the library. Two will be used in the office and the others will replace the personal computers currently there, said Porter.

In addition to local leaders and officials, invited guests and their representatives include U.S. Senators Mitch McConnell and Jim Bunning, U.S. Rep. Ron Lewis and Gov. Paul Patton. Toyoda Gosei Chairman of the Board of Directors Tokio Horigome will attend along with the president, Tsugio Kadowaki, of Toyoda Gosei North America Corporation and President Atsushi Niimi of Toyoto Manufacturing North America.

After the ceremony, invitees will return to the TG Kentucky plant to plant two commemorative holly trees and to tour the facility.

On Oct. 12, TG Kentucky will hold an open house for the public from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. which will mark the first time the plant has held a public open house.

New 2004 Toyota vehicles, 11 different models, will be on display at this time at TG Kentucky. TG Kentucky makes many of the parts used by Toyota in manufacturing its cars, trucks and vans.

An increase in the use of functional plastics by Toyota has led to expansion for TG Kentucky. Currently, TG Kentucky is increasing its size, personnel and product line. According to Porter, an additional 70,000 square feet facility is being added and another 35 employees are being hired. This will bring the number of employees there to around 575.

“The main product of the expansion will be plastic fuel tanks,” said Senior Coordinator Katsumi Saito. “These fuel tanks are already on the 2004 Sienna and will likely become the industry standard because of their strength and lightness.”

Construction on the expansion is expected to be completed in December.

“That’s an ambitious timetable,” said Porter, “but it is one we can achieve.”

With its 550 employees, TG Kentucky has a current payroll of approximately $17 million annually.
